thesis on 09/06/2017 at the Institute of Special
Education and Rehabilitation, Faculty of
Philosophy, University “Ss. Cyril and Methodius
“ – Skopje in front of a commission composed

Introduction: A successful treatment of any
disorder, condition or disease requires timely
detection and accurate diagnostics. This is
precisely what is missing in individuals with a
dual diagnosis of an intellectual disability and a
mental disorder, both in Macedonia and worldwide.
In order to overcome the deficiencies in
the treatment, and to improve the quality of life
for these individuals as well, they should be detected
on time and then approached with diagnosing
and preparation of a plan for treating
Goal: The main goal of this research is obtaining
a result of the presence of intellectual disability
among institutionalized individuals with
mental disorders on the basis of the type of
mental disorder, the age and the gender of the
person. Also, one of the main goals is presenting
the mental deterioration in individuals with

mental disorders, as well as its connection with
the age of the individuals with mental disorder.
Despite having the basic goals, this research,
as well as research on this subject from all
over the world, serves as an example for raising
the awareness about the diversity and atypical
presentations of the patients with a dual
diagnosis of intellectual disability and mental
Methodology: For achieving the goal and
tasks of this research, 50 individuals with different
diagnosis of mental disorder, different
age and different gender were tested. The sample
that took part in this research was a suitable
sample, i.e. individuals that during the research
were hospitalized in the below mentioned public
health institution. The research took place
in PHI Psychiatric Hospital „Skopje“ from
Skopje. For collecting the data in this research,
as well as for achieving the goals of the research,
two methods, three research techniques
and two instruments were used. The methods
that were used during this research included
the method of comparative analysis and the
method of correlation analysis, while the techniques
included analysis of documentation,
testing and survey. As the most suitable instruments
for this research, I decided to use the test
for measuring the IQ and level of mental deterioration
of the respondents – WAIS (Wechsler
Adult Intelligence Scale for the Macedonian
population) and Demographic questionnaire
which determined the basic demographic characteristics
of the respondents. With the help of
these two instruments, the most important data
for achieving the research goals were obtained,
which were further processed and gave the end
results of this research.
Results: The processing of the data from the
study showed that a significant proportion of
the individuals with mental disorders do not
have intellectual disability as a second diagnosis
(p=0,0001), however in the population
with mental disorders there will be an appearance
of intellectual disability in a significantly
greater extend in comparison to the general

population (p=0,00096). The type of mental
disorder has an effect on the appearance of
intellectual disability(p=0,015). The gender
(p=0,683) and the age (p=0,669) of the individuals
with mental disorders are not affecting
the appearance and the level of intellectual
disability. There is no statically significant
connection between the appearance and the
level of mental deterioration and intellectual
disability in individuals with mental disorders
(p=0,921) and its appearance does not depend
on the gender (p=0,606) and age (p=0,649) of
the individual with a mental disorder.
Conclusion: Considering the fact that there
are a great number of people in the institutions
for individuals with mental disorders,
who despite having a mental disorder also
have an intellectual disability as a second diagnosis,
a lot more research is needed which
will be beneficial for the better understanding
of the condition and needs of these individuals,
thus improving the diagnostics and
the treatment, as well as the quality of their

intellectual disability, mental disorder, mental deterioration, WAIS (Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale for the Macedonian population).
