FOLLOWERSHIP AND FOLLOWERS IN ORGANIZATIONS: A CHALLENGE OF THE NEW ERA

Abstract


The dominance of leadership and leaders in research and theory has overshadowed the importance of followership and followers. Despite the claim that leadership cannot exist without followers, it still remains in the focus, while everything else is considered less important. Attention should be directed to the ones who follow the leader, since leaders do not act alone, in a vacuum, without followers.This paper reviews theoretical considerations of the followership concept and the followers. It also provides a detailed overview of the theories and definitions of followership and discusses the relatively new
paradigm of followership, while stressing the need for completely restructuring the organizations in order to respond to the changes in the global economy.
