Abstract


The concepts of tall poppy and tall poppy syndrome are introduced. The term tall poppy is used to describe individuals who are more prominent than other people, while the tall poppy syndrome is used to describe a psychological phenomenon of denigrating, attacking, criticizing successful individuals. Manifestations of this syndrome are described at a general level and its detrimental effects in the working environment are also pointed out. Findings relating the tall poppy syndrome to certain psychological variables are reviewed. The tall poppy syndrome is influenced by the way the person has acquired its position, its present behavior and personality. Individuals whose high achievements are believed to result from theirs abilities and their work are perceived positively. Also, individuals who are believed to possess positive personality traits, are perceived more positively.
